so my second all time favorite author after jane of course is georgette heyer. even critics hail her as being the next best thing to reading jane austen... i totally love her books.... even the one that is my least favorite of hers is still a favorite relatively speaking... she is that good! i love all her dialogue, her wit is FANTASTIC, and her research was IMPECCABLE therefore i love getting lost in the regency world of england. i own now around 32 of her books some of them i have duplicate copies because every new re-release cover is so beautiful so i call myself an addict collector. all her books are out of print. i think she died in the 70's sometime, and was born at the first part of the 1900's. so, every now and then they will do a stint of re-issuing her books and diane, erin and i gobble them up and pre-order and everything. i remember diane giving me my first georgette, THE GRAND SOPHY. it was so good. it's not my ALL TIME favorite, maybe it comes in like 15th place or so, but still i love it for being my "first"
so now that they are re-issuing a few of them this year, i of course have been reading her straight for about a month, and find myself totally lost in her language. i read ALL the ones i own probably once a year (i am never disappointed... how rare is THAT in a book? i know i'll love it).
so, my poor family has to reap this benefit of jackie talking "georgette"
some examples...
"asher, pray, don't be so addle-brained and jump of the couch onto your head AGAIN. i fear one more bump one your noodle will bring CPS down upon me before i know it"
"that's doing it much too brown kaiden"
"have you lost ALL SENSE of propriety?"
"dash it, jon, i don't like your work schedule right now"
etc. etc. etc. they all look at me funny when i use such expressions as "shatter-brained" "i cute my wisdoms years ago" or jon's least favorites "dicked in the nob" or "nod-cocks" ok ok STOP freaking out if you are reading this thinking i am extremely vulgar, but it is us american's that made such words dirty, not the eloquent britts.
and, really, can you beat this sentence... "he would speedily have cut the fellow's comb for him, for although he was not yet in high force he had no doubt of his ability to draw the elegant Mr. Stacy's cork, besides darkening both his daylights, before tipping him a settler."
ahhhhh FAMOUS
now i will end by saying if you would like to embark on trying heyer, here are a few i recommend from a library
*the masqueraders
*arabella
*frederika
*faro's daughter
*cotillion
and a few you can actually buy this year
*regency buck (one of my FAVS)
*black sheep (another FAV)
and some with a mystery-edge to them
*the toll gate
*the talisman ring
two that are harder to do because of all the french but probably rank high on my list
*these old shades
*the devil's cub
wow that was hard to decide what to recommend and now i am thinking of more i would hahahah ANY you get are good. but beware, she also wrote some other stuff too that isn't as good, like her contemporary mysteries and such. stick with her "romance" genre all though don't be expecting lots of gush, there is none, and ONE DISCLAIMER YOU MUST HAVE A HIGH IQ TO GET HER LANGUAGE AND HUMOR AND AMAZING CHARACTERS
that is all!
i fear i have rambled on in such a way, i had better stop.
